Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop advance directives for nursing home residents in South Korea.

Methods: Advance directives were developed based on the six required items recommended by Korean domestic Life-sustaining Treatment Decision-making Act and a review of related literature. A Consensus Oriented Decision Making (CODM) analysis was performed with 10 practitioners from 2 nursing homes, and based on their consensus.

Results: Advance directives for nursing home residents were preliminarily composed of 3 domains: writer identification, document contents, and document management. These 3 domains of advance directives were validated by confirmatory content analysis (CVI=.97).

Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the newly developed advance directives may provide opportunities for practitioners to specify the treatment scope prior to deterioration of the health of nursing home residents, and provide sufficient information for nursing home residents and their families so that they can discuss together with counseling, and come to a well-informed medical decision.
